Jailbirds Stage ‘Shawshank’ Prison Break

19 12 2007

Two inmates in a prison in New Jersey have staged a daring escape apparently inspired by the film The Shawshank Redemption!!!

The cunning duo, said to be armed and dangerous, are still on the run after digging holes in the walls of their cells and squeezing through.

As in The Shawshank Redemption, they used posters of cover girls to hide the holes they had dug in their walls.

The pair, Jose Espinosa and Otis Blunt, left a note wishing the authorities “Happy Holidays” and thanking a guard they claimed had helped them…. how nice!

Espinosa, 20, had pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter following a drive-by shooting and was facing a minimum of 17 years when he was due to be sentenced on January 25.

Court orders Tweety, Mickey to take the stand!!

19 12 2007

A clerical error in a court in Naples included the cartoon characters Tweety Bird, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and his girlfriend Daisy, in a summons for criminal trial of a Chinese man accused of counterfeiting products of Disney and Warner Bros.

The court summons cites “Titty, Paperino, Paperina, Topolino” — the Italian names for the characters — as damaged parties in the trial.

“Unfortunately they cannot show up, as they are residents of Disneyland,” officials said in an interview. “It certainly pleased us that the characters were considered real, because that’s what we try to do.”

Let’s hope the characters will not be prosecuted for failing to appear!

Japans says UFOs are Definatly Real!!!!

19 12 2007

Japan’s chief government spokesman has announced that unidentified flying objects (UFOs) exist.

Earlier, in response to a question from an opposition lawmaker, the Japanese government issued a statement saying it could not confirm any cases of UFOs.

But Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura later told reporters he believed they were “definitely” real.

It is the sort of question politicians dread but, under Japanese rules, are unable to ignore.

A member of the opposition asked the government what its policy was to deal with UFOs.

He said work should begin urgently to try to confirm whether or not they exist because of what he called “incessant” reports of sightings.

The Japanese civil service swung into action.

In a statement it said that should a flying saucer be spotted in the country’s airspace, a fighter would be scrambled to attempt visual confirmation.

But it emphasised that the government was not aware of cases where a UFO from space had been discovered.

Most alerts turned out to be birds or other objects.

‘Not confirmed’

The document revealed that Japan has not yet planned what to do should aliens arrive here.

Many UFO sightings can be easily explained

The government’s chief spokesman Nobutaka Machimura drew laughter from reporters when he admitted that this was a “stereotypical” response from the bureaucrats.

Perhaps with his tongue a little in his cheek he insisted that he believed UFOs did “definitely” exist.

Questioned about the existence of alien spaceships, Japan’s Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda thought about it and then answered carefully.

He said he had “not yet confirmed” whether they existed.

The conspiracy theorists will note that the answer was not a “no”.

Censors battle for Manhunt 2 ban

18 12 2007

Arrrgggg… is it just me or do censors not understand the reson for having certificates on computer games. If a game has an 18 theme much like a film then it should be only used by peeps 18+!

The reason Manhunt 2 was banned was apparently cos it was too graphic, it’s sustained, casual sadism… and cos it might give kids bad ideas…… now the key line here is “give kids bad ideas”…….. GIVE THE GAME AN 18 CERTIFICATE!…… If kids play it then it’s the parents fault!

Anyway… Last week developer Rockstar won a hearing at the Video Appeals Committee to have a ban on the title lifted. Good job boys!

But the Evil British Board of Film Classification said that decision was based on an incorrect interpretation of the Video Recordings Act……………..meh!

The game was first banned in June, for its “sustained, casual sadism”. A revised version was also banned.

“The VAC judgement, if allowed to stand, would have fundamental implications with regard to all the Board’s decisions, including those turning upon questions of unacceptable levels of violence,” the BBFC said in a statement.

Rockstar said it was disappointed that the BBFC had decided to appeal the VAC judgment.

Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Rockstar’s publisher Take Two, said: “We believe the VAC decision was correct and do not understand the BBFC’s decision to expend further public resources to censor a game that contains content well within the bounds established by the BBFC’s 18-plus ratings certification.”

When the game was first refused certification, effectively banning it, David Cooke, director of the BBFC, said the game featured “unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone”.

He added: “There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game.”

The title has become one of the most controversial games in recent times.

At the VAC appeal hearing, Fred Hasson, president of developer association Tiga, said he was “surprised at how tame [the title was] compared to some very graphical scenes I’ve seen in other games which have received certification”.

He added: “I expected it to be a lot worse… I can’t believe that this has been singled out as something that is worth banning.”

Black Hole “Owns” Galaxy!!!

17 12 2007

According to the US space agency NASA a powerful jet of particles from a “supermassive” black hole has been seen blasting a nearby galaxy!!!

Galaxies have been seen colliding before, but it is the first time this form of galactic pownage has been witnessed by astronomers!! :O

The findings are to be published in the Astrophysical Journal.

They were obtained using Nasa’s space-based Chandra X-ray Observatory, its Hubble Space Telescope, and Spitzer Space Telescope, as well as the Very Large Array (VLA) and Merlin radio telescopes on the ground.

The event is occurring in ‘a galaxy far far far away’ called 3C321 (astonomers have uncreative naming - *sigh*), which lies 1.4 billion light-years from Earth. It contains two galaxies in orbit around one another which are in the process of merging.  For the simpletons among you that means it occured 1.4 billion years ago!!!! (as the light has taken that time to reach us!).

The effect of the jet on the companion galaxy is likely to be substantial, because the galaxies in 3C321 are extremely close to one another. At only about 20,000 light years apart, these galaxies lie approximately the same distance as the Earth is from the centre of the Milky Way.

It is possible that it would not all be bad news for the galaxy being struck by the jet. The massive influx of energy and radiation from the jet may induce the formation of large numbers of stars and planets once its initial wake of destruction is complete.

“Although we call it a death star galaxy, in the end it might be a source of new life in the more distant galaxy,” said Dr Hardcastle.

Features seen in images from the VLA and Chandra indicate that the jet started hitting the smaller galaxy about one million years ago. This is a blink of the eye in the lifetime of 3C321, which marks it out as an important opportunity to study a rare astronomical phenomenon, say the astronomers.

Oldest Man in the World Dies at 116 year old!

17 12 2007

Hryhoriy Nestor, a bachelor who was thought in his lifetime to be the oldest person in the world, has died at the age of 116 in Ukraine….. Mr Nestor died in his sleep on Friday night in the village of Stary Yarychev, in the western region of Lviv, the Kiev newspaper Segodnya reports.

He died before proof of his age was submitted to Guinness World Records. Previously the world’s recognised oldest living person is currently Edna Parker of the United States, who turned 114 in April.

Just a few close relatives and neighbours gathered for Mr Nestor’s funeral. In accordance with his wish that there should be no crying, a hearty meal was served of his favourite dishes: warm potato and herring, and cabbage with home-made sausage. Good job Hryhoriy!

A relation with whom Hryhoriy lived, said he had led an active life to the last, helping around the house, whether it was making dumplings or tending the chickens.

He was no different on Friday, though he doused his head with cold water that evening - something he had often done before, complaining of headaches.

“His death came as a surprise to us, he just didn’t wake up again,” Oksana said.

“After his master’s death, his favourite cat Murchik didn’t go into his corner like he usually did but lay down on his bed,” she added.

Born, according to family documents, on 15 March 1891, Mr Nestor, a former farm labourer, put his long life down to the fact that he never married.

“He didn’t find himself a mate because he was a short man and never had money,” Oksana believes.

He also led a healthy life, she says.

He loved to get outside and would run barefoot through the grass. Vodka he drank in moderation, and his favourite food was simple country fare with his greatest luxury a slice of sausage in a bread roll.

So they you have it dudes…. Housework…. sausage baps and a spot of vodka every once in a while and you’re on your way to living til you are 100+……. no a bad knock either!!!!

David Tennant Leaving Dr Who!?

16 12 2007

Catherine Tate has suggested that the next series of Doctor Who could be the last for actor David Tennant. Speaking on Radio 2’s Jonathan Ross programme, she said: “I think it’s maybe David’s last series.”

The BBC refused to comment on Mr Tennant’s future as the shows star.

Tate, who first appeared in the 2006 Christmas special, is to return as the doctor’s assistant, Donna, for the entire run of the fourth series.
She will also be joined for several episodes by the doctor’s former companion Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman.

When pressed on whether Tennant would return to play the timelord in special Dr Who shows in future, Tate replied: “Possibly.”
Tate also confirmed that the forthcoming series would be her last.

Tate made her Doctor Who debut last year as a runaway bride who found herself transported into the Tardis as she prepared for her wedding on Christmas Eve.

The episode attracted an audience of 9.4 million when it was screened on BBC One on Christmas Day.

This year’s Christmas special, starring Kylie Minogue (*sigh*), is due to be screened at 1850 GMT on 25 December. (see BBC website for more info).

Speaking to Doctor Who magazine, the pop star said appearing in the show was “like stepping back in time” -”I really felt at home being back in the world of TV,” she added. “I’ve definitely got the acting bug again!”

So who do you reckon will be the new Dr Who peeps??? Feel free to comment :P
